Specialized technical investigations drive the development of sustainable infrastructure in the Southland region
GEOINTEC has started the year with a series of comprehensive geotechnical studies for various renewable energy projects in the Southland region of New Zealand. These geotechnical studies represent over 200 MW of proposed installed capacity, consolidating the Oceanic country’s commitment to energy transition and sustainable development.
Technical Scope of Geotechnical Investigations
The work carried out has comprised a wide spectrum of specialized tests and analyses. Among the implemented techniques are Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) and test pits, fundamental tools for determining the stratigraphic characteristics of the terrain and the bearing capacity of the soil.
Additionally, electrical and thermal resistivity testing has been executed, crucial elements for the design of grounding systems and the evaluation of thermal dissipation in electrical generation facilities. The geotechnical studies also included geophysical testing using the MASW (Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves) method, a technique that allows determining subsoil stratigraphy and the dynamic properties of materials.

Risk assessment and infiltration capacity
An essential component of the investigation program was liquefaction analysis, a critical aspect in New Zealand due to its seismic activity. This study evaluates the soil’s potential to lose strength during seismic events, vital information for safe structural design.
Complementarily, infiltration tests were performed to evaluate the soil’s capacity to absorb water, fundamental data for the design of drainage systems and stormwater management in the projected facilities.
